I will be getting my BA in Graphic Design next spring and I'm wanting to find a technical illustration job...

I'm getting my BA degree in graphic design and I have a AAS degree in computer aided graphics. I have 30 years experience in computer/mechanical design. How would one get into freelance technical illustration? I would like to meet another freelance and start a partnership.

What about the free illustration software like gimp or a free vector software like inkscape?
