Client wants a "sketch" first before proceeding

Time for a new post. Occasionally I have a client who wishes to see a sketch or mock-up of what I am to illustrate. It's a reasonable request. Best to make sure everyone is on the same page before spending hours on artwork that may not be what the client had in mind. That said, how best to do this w...

Re: Technical Illustration Schools/Programs

Tough one. I think other than where James studied there are few schools/programs dedicated just to technical illustration. I think it is something you have to do for yourself in some ways. A good mix of graphic design, drawing, 3D modeling, perhaps CAD/drafting skills....put in a blender and there y...

Best projection for infographics

I've been tapped to help someone do an infographic of a transit system. The objective is to show delays in the system, illustrating both frequency and types of delays occurring at each station. I've got some good ideas of how to do this, but I'm wondering if I should go with a 2D or isometric projec...

Re: New Work

Really sharp Steven! Drawing trains can never be viewed as having to do work.
How did you handle the fade-in from line to colour?

Re: Photoshop painting tutorial

Just did a quick test of Kevin Hulsey's Photoshop painting tutorial. Outside of being a video it does a great job. I'm still a "do 99% of the work in Illustrator" kind of guy. I like having the ability to edit paths, colours, gradients, etc... I guess that is one reason I try to get the most out of ...

Re: Anyone use SketchUp?

Thought I would give this thread a bump. I'm seeing the benefit of using SketchUp library items to get reference material for my illustrations. The odds are good someone has build a model of something you are working on, or even components (engines, etc.) Does anyone else use per-existing SketchUp m...

Re: Photoshop painting tutorial

Good question Steven. I'm always scared taking anything into Photoshop...unless I was doing a ghosted image. My struggle is whether to turn paths into selections, and then how to actually "paint" within that selection. Must be pretty easy, but Photoshop not intuitive for me for that kind of work.

Re: http://vantagegraphics.co.uk

Looks good. Did you find a theme that was already responsive, or did you hack the CSS yourself? I'm in the process of doing the same with my site. I found a nice clean grid theme, but of course want to tweak it somewhat. Now I've gone in too deep and am really testing my CSS knowledge! This is a gre...

Ghosted view or cutaway?

I thought I asked this one, but apparently not. Which is better ghosted view or cutaway? Both work for me. I think ghosting works if the outer shell of the object is well understood and common to the viewer: automobile, aircraft, etc...
