Re: Necessary Astute Graphics Plug-Ins for Tech-Illustration

They're all pretty handy... but I recommend AutoSavior (free), ColliderScribe, InkScribe (though I'm so used to the AI pen tool, I'm still struggling to learn this), MirrorMe, SubScribe (free), VectorScribe. I should probably do some videos to show how I use the Astute Graphics tools. There are a lo...

Re: Art Agents?

My thoughts: Pros More work (possibly) Greater reach, more exposure (possibly) Larger fees, bigger projects (possibly) Less non-billing time (invoicing, accounting, promotion, etc.) Someone to have your back if a project goes sour (or they might back their client) Career planning Cons Paying ~25% of...

Re: Illustrator Output from MoI

Not too bad.. the curves are beziers rather than straight line segments.

Original file (without the outline/spatial edge) had 2604 points.
I got that down to 1836 with a quick Object > Path > Simplify.

Looks like that would be workable.

Cool stuff, Don!

Re: Illustrator Output from MoI

Pretty nice. How many points are we looking at in the Illustrator file?

Are the curves made up of tiny line segments like most 3D>Illustrator workflows?

Re: Technical Illustration Schools/Programs

My post-secondary education started with an art fundamentals year that got everyone up to speed on the basics of sketching, painting, still life, life drawing, light & colour theory, perspective, design. No computers and not much room for creativity or expression. All technical exercises. My first y...

Re: Client wants a "sketch" first before proceeding

Don nailed it. If their idea is so rough that they need to see a sketch from you before committing to it, you're clearly providing some them with some value, and you should be compensated for that. Doing a free sketch sets up a bad precedent that you'll work for free. It also stunts the creative pro...

Re: Astute Graphics Summer Fest Sale - 50% Off

Instant Isometrics is still a dream, but I think your "Angle Eyedropper" sounds feasible. Their Dynamic Measure & Protractor tool in the VectorScribe package have a lot of options, so you can get something close to what you describe. You'll have to click a start point and end point or click and drag...

Affinity Designer - New vector drawing app for Mac

Serif Software is developing a new vector drawing application called Affinity Designer. It's currently in beta testing and you can try it out for free: https://affinity.serif.com/ It's lacking a lot of features that a technical illustrator might need... there's no way to draw a grid, create guides, ...
