Re: Post Your Workspace!

Mike, Nothing has yet to compare to the resolution that Apple pushes through their screens. The TV is fairly close and it took me a good half of a week to calibrate the TV just right to get it's sharpness and color quality and contrast as close as possible to the iMac. Even still, the TV has better ...

Re: Post Your Workspace!

Here is my latest set-up at home. 27" iMac, 21"Cintiq (with large Intuos 4 tablet as a secondary option underneath), and introducing my newest addition for creating my future detailed cutaways at actual print size or larger: 43" Sony HD tv. I have the Nostromo gaming pad and roller ball mouse attach...

Re: line art and hatching

This was the last freelance work I did before I got my fulltime job. http://www.swhowardillustration.blogspot.com/2012/05/cinemeridian-technical-illustration.html I made a semi-realistic render of the camera, but the client wanted the camera to look like the old Bolex illustrations where there is no...

I will try posting here again later with my actual response. I just want to make sure I can post a reply this time around.

Re: Path length calculator for Illustrator

The absolute best plug-in(s) I have seen for Illustrator come from Astute Graphics. Vector Scribe from Astute Graphics has a "Dynamic Measure" tool that does a really good job and converting those measurements into 'art'.

Re: Anything we can do to help?

Possibly. The thing is with technical illustration, it can generally be one of the most time consuming forms of illustration out there, whether freelance or full-time employment. I've been meaning to do a post for some time, I just need a good screen capture app and will post when things free up a b...

Re: Anyone have any experince with ship / naval illustration

I currently do not have the links on hand, but a good starter place for quotes is the Graphic Artist's Guild Handbook for Ethical Guidelines and Pricing. Another artist I have seen do a ship cutaway is James Provost (which is pretty cool looking by the way, James!) For a traditional approach, Richar...

Re: New work

Thanks! @Clint- The linework was a particularly challenging thing. The client wanted black and white (no grays or midtones) but it had to appear as if it were gradating. The old traditional way to do that would be easy with pen and ink or scratchboard, but in Illustrator I had to play around with di...

Re: New work

It is the post with the Cinemeridian work.
*I would have posted this in the other "New Work" section on the forum, but it wasn't working for some reason.

New work

http://www.swhowardillustration.blogspot.com/ Awhile back, earlier this year when I still was needing to do freelance work (before I started working as a full-time technical illustrator for Space Systems/Loral), I took up a job on the Technicalillustrators.org job board (I believe it was the first ...
