Hey Jim,

Do you start with full versions of each: wireframe and fine detail, then blend them together? I imagine that might be a lot of work if you already know when sections will be which.

I am close to finishing up a Vincent Black Shadow that I have been toying with for almost 10 years. Full-on trace job, but really doing it to test and hone all of my Illustrator skills. Still find myself digging the internet for closeups of engines, forks, brakes, etc... I should just buy one

Lets see that Vincent! Thanks for checking out my latest for Cycle World, it is a two page spread in the Feb. issue. For this one I just drew the line work and wanted to add a touch of color so I just kept going until I ran out of time. Ship it!

Many times for clients I do provide a full color version and clean line work and whatever is in between.

Jim, just checking out some of your work again. You ever dabble with any 3D programs for your work? You sound like a straight-up Adobe kinda guy, but you produce nothing short of beautiful work. You mentioned in one of my threads to "just draw it"....good advice, but surely you have some short-cuts...don't tell me you don't have a bunch of nuts and bolts in your symbol library.

Hi Matt, Thanks for checking out my work. No 3D I use only Photoshop like 99% of the time. I did purchase this templet from Kevin Hulsey a while ago and it has really been a great asset: http://www.automotiveillustrations.com/ ... bolts.html

I always enjoy looking at your work, although everytime I do it gives me a severe case of 'talent envy' :)

I love the sense of depth you've got in the cutaways. What reference did you get? Dare I ask how long this took?

Thanks for the kind words! The job only took a few months and reference was all over the map from photos, cad, you name it. I hope to work with James to maybe do a more formal posting about this project.
