How do you draw awkward curved and cone-like surfaces?

Drawing in all tangent lines indicates the shape of the rising surface well, but does not look clean enough.
Removing all of the tangent lines looks nice and clean, but the surface looks flat.



Does anyone have any tips or ideas on how best to draw these kind of surfaces?
