@Don At the peak, I was doing 12 illustrations a day. Not a comfortable pace, but the work got done and I don't think quality suffered.

@Mike Reference provided was a mix of napkin sketches, existing diagrams cut together, and photographs.

Hi Jim Hatch, yes I am guilty of making it. I modeled it in an old cad program. It's a depiction of an early Apollo 'direct ascent' spacecraft; I thought it would make an interesting 'exploded view' picture. The assembly is speculation, but I tried to base it on the ideas of the time. The smaller pictures are notable systems that warranted closer inspection. I did the picture as a hobby, and it took a few months of weekends to complete.

Many years ago I saw an original line drawing you did (of a truck chassis) and I thought, "this is the kind of art I'd like to do."

Hi 'ab' - and welcome. That's a really nice work you've posted. I bet there was quite a few hours in those weekends spent on it - it looks quite a job! Out of curiosity - what was the software you used?
I hope we'll see you around - and posting - we could do with some more regulars. If you've not already done so have a look though the main site blog - there's lots of great reading and viewing!
There's some *very* talented people here, one of which - Jim - you've already met in the post above. Then there's people like myself who wander over here in the vain hope of picking up some of their talent by osmosis and association... LOL!

Mike, I use solidworks '99. Though more often I'm using the open-source Freecad (and blender for rendering).

This is some incredible work! I'd definitely suggest putting a portfolio of some kind together to highlight your work in one place. Whether it be a professional site, deviant art, a wordpress, tumblr, or a blog, a place to have your art centrally displayed is extremely helpful for finding work. I just have a [url]blog: http://www.swhowardillustration.blogspot.com[/url] or http://www.stevenwhowardart.blogspot.com, but it has allowed me to land a couple freelance jobs, my now full-time job, and many others asking for my art that I've had to turn down or pass on to others. Your work is amazing and I'm sure that, even if you already have gotten work, many more will want to hire you with a central site for your work. Just some food for thought. I look forward to seeing more of your work, especially now that I have been getting into the 3D modeling. I really dig the stylistic approach to the renders. Do you have an image showing just the polygons of the Apollo stuff?
